Kannada poet Kayyara Kinhanna Rai passed away

Famous Kannada poet and freedom fighter, Kayyara Kinhanna Rai passed  away today at his residence at Badiyadkka in Kasaragod district of Kerala on August 9. 101-year-old poet recently celebrated his 100 birthday on last june8, 2015.

Kayyara Kinhanna Rai was born on 8 June 1915 to Duggappa and Deyyakka Rai. His mother tongue was Tulu.  Kinhanna or Kinyanna means He learned Kannada in school. Later he published his first handwritten journal, 'Susheela', at the age of 12. Influenced by Gandhiji he took part in the freedom struggle of India.

Kayyara Kinhanna Rai started his career as a secondary school teacher. He teached at Nava jeevana high school. He also jumped into journalism and contributed his writings to newspapers like Swabhimana, Madras Mail and The Hindu.  

He came to prominence in literary world through his debut poems collection Shreemukha. Some of his famous poems are Shreemukha, Aikyagana, Punarnava, Chethana and Koraga. 

Lakshmeeshana kathegalu and Parashurama are his collection of stories. He has written a biography of Govinda Pai, the Kannada poet from whom he was highly influenced. His other important works are Malayala Sahitya Charithre and Sahithya Drushti. Dhuditave nanna devaru is his autobiography.

Kayyara Kinyanna Rai was only a poet and freedom fighter He was in the forefront of the movement to merge the Kannada-speaking region north of the Chandragiri river with Karnataka to fulfill its linguistic and development aspirations after the 1957 States reorganization. Kayyara Kinhanna Rai founded Kasaragod Vileenekarana Kriya Samiti to fight for the cause.
 
Kayyara Kinyanna Rai received lot of Awards and Honours. 
  • He received the National Award for Best Teacher in 1969.
  • He was conferred an honorary doctorate by Mangalore University in 2005. He also chaired the 66th Akhila Kannada Sahitya Sammelana (Kannada Literature Conference), which was held at Mangalore. Karnataka Sahitya Academy award – 1969
  • Honorary Fellowship by Manipal Academy of Higher Education (1970).
  • Pejawar Award in literature – 2004
  • Alva's Nudisri Award – 2005
  • Adarsha Ratna Award – 2006
  • Nadoja (Teacher of the State) Award – 2006
  • Karnataka Ekikarana (Unification) Award – 2007
  • Honorary Fellowship by the Kannada Sahitya Parishat – 2009
  • 1st Karnataka Gadinada Ratna Award
Kayyara Kinhanna Rai lived long and great life at at his residence Kavitha Kuteera at Badiyadkka in Kasaragod  with his family. Unyakka was his wife and He was a father to eight children's.

Kayyara Kinhanna Rai will live among us through his work. I wish Kannada people will remember him for long long time. RIP Kayyara Kinhanna Rai
