Freakonomics : Steven Levitt & Stephen J. Dubner.

Few days back I was browsing the bookshelf of our office library. during process I came across a book titled 'Freakonomics'. the line 'International bestseller' caught my eyes. after reading the information on the back cover of the book, I decided to give it a try.

now I am wondering, why I didn't knew about this book all these days. anyway, this is not the first time that I was regretted for being ignorant about some of the good books.

it happens. anyway that is not important. it is not too late I believe.

Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything.

is a non fiction book authored by economist Steven Levitt and New York Times journalist Stephen J. Dubner.

The book really explores the hidden sides of things. The book presses the importance of data. the authors uses these data to prove their theories. and it is convincing.

look at some of the interesting questions from the book.

Which is more dangerous, a gun or a swimming pool?
What do schoolteachers and sumo wrestlers have in common?
Why do drug dealers still live with their moms?
How much do parents really matter?
How did the legalization of abortion affect the rate of violent crime?

I was shocked to learn that in US roughly 550 children's under the age of ten drown in swimming pool each year. and roughly 175 children's under the age of ten die each year from guns.[this book was published in 2005]. so Which is more dangerous, a gun or a swimming pool?

What do schoolteachers and sumo wrestlers have in common? - in which the authors the beauty of incentives, as well as their dark side - cheating. they classify the incentives as social, moral and economic incentives. the facts about Japanese sumo wrestlers are really interesting.

other interesting information I learn from this book is about Ku Klux Klan. Ku Klux Klan was a American organization whose members fought for white supremacy.

above are some of the interesting tidbits of what the book is all about. it is all about new way of looking at things and asking right questions. it is all about solving the puzzles through rich set of convincing data, against our conventional wisdom.

First published in the U.S. in 2005, Freakonomics went on to sell more than 4 million copies around the world, in 35 languages. It also inspired a follow-up book, SuperFreakonomics.

Freakonomics is a good book. I want to thank Mr. M.G.Vinay Kumar, one of the directors of our company for creating a small library in office with some good books. I hope this library will expand and more great books will be added. I requested Mr.MGV to add kannada book also in this library. he kindly agreed to it.

The next book I want read from this book shelf is - It Happened in India by Kishore Biyani.

As New York Times puts it. Freakonomics is 'A romp of a read... A splendid book'.
