RIP - Eli Wallach

Few years ago, I was watching this movie called  'The Holiday' starring Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet. I liked the movie. but what is more interesting was the character of a old man called ' Arthur Abbott' with whom Iris Simpkins [Kate Winslet] befriends.

I was surprised to know that old man character was played by Eli Wallach, the ugly Tuco in Clint Eastwood's evergreen western film 'Good Bad and the Ugly' directed by Sergio Leone.

Today afternoon while reading the newspaper during lunch hour in office, I came across the news of Eli Wallach's death.  ofcourse the first thing that came to my mind was ugly Tuco character. then I remember The Holiday.

What is more amazing about him, was that he was active in films in his 90's also. that is the kind of passion few actors holds like Clint Eastwood for example.
He made "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps" (2010) and Ghost Writer, when he was 94.

some of the memorable films of  Eli Wallach are The Magnificent Seven (1960),  The Misfits (1961), and Tuco in The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966), The Godfather Part III, The Two Jakes (1990), and  The Holiday (2006).

He also played opposite some of the biggest stars in history. His more than 150 credits includes roles in "The Misfits" (1961), with Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe; "Lord Jim" (1965), with Peter O'Toole and James Mason; "Tough Guys" (1986), with Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster; "The Two Jakes" (1990), with Jack Nicholson; and even a small, uncredited role in "Mystic River" (2003), starring Sean Penn and Tim Robbins and directed by Clint Eastwood - his co-star in "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly."

Eli Wallach was born in Red Hook, Brooklyn at 156 Union St., a son of Jewish immigrants Abraham and Bertha (Schorr) Wallach, both from Poland. He had a brother and two sisters, with his family being the only Jews in an otherwise Italian American neighborhood.

Eli Wallach attended the University of Texas  and served in the Army during World War II. After the war, he attended the Actors Studio and became a leading devotee of the Method, the approach to acting that asks performers to draw on their own experiences and emotions for an interior understanding of the part.

Eli Wallach received BAFTA Awards, Tony Awards and Emmy Awards for his work, and received an Honorary Academy Award at the 2nd Annual Governors Awards, presented on November 13, 2010.

Kate Winslet his co-star in The Holiday, told that Eli Wallach, was one of the "most charismatic men" she'd met.

Eli Wallach was married to stage actress Anne Jackson for 66 years from March 5, 1948 until his death. They had three children: Peter, Roberta, and Katherine.

What we can take from Eli's life is the kind of passion and dedication he had to his work till his death. his legacy will live on.

RIP Eli Wallach - One of Hollywood's unforgettable Actor.
