RIP Mandolin U. Shrinivas.

Heart broken by the news of renowned musician Mandolin U. Shrinivas' s death. really hard to believe that he passed away in his young age. He bought whole new fame to the little instrument with his extraordinary playing abilities. when he played those carnatic songs on Mandolin, it gave a unique experience to the music lovers.

I loved his music. I can feel it. now also I'm holding this CD of his and staring at his picture with the instrument that became part of his name. great loss to the word music. Indian music in particular.

Known for having adapted a difficult electric Western instrument to the Carnatic stage with awe-inspiring success, Mandolin Shrinivas impressed pundits and lay listeners alike. from child prodigy to master musician Mandolin  U. Srinivas's musical journey was magical.

born 28 February 1969, in Palakol in Andhra Pradesh, Uppalapu Shrinivas's musical journey begin in his home at the age of six when he started to play his father's Mandolin. recognizing his son's extraordinary talent his father taught him music providing him new Mandolin.

He made his debut public Carnatic concert performance in 1978 during the Thyagaraja Aradhana festival at Gudivada in Andhra Pradesh. Thereafter in 1981, at age 12, he gave his first public concert in Chennai for the Indian Fine Arts Society.

Soon he started trotting the globe. In 1983, Shrinivas performed at the JazzFest Berlin and later toured Canada, Australia and many other countries.

In 1984, late Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu M.G. Ramachandran made Shrinivas the official musician of the state government.
He was the first South Indian musician to perform at the Cevantino Festival in Mexico in 1987.

Apart from traditional Carnatic concerts, Shrinivas was a favorite with other well-known global artistes such as John McLaughlin, Michael Nyman and Michael Brook. His familiarity with crossover genres made him an automatic choice. He distinguished himself in collaborations with artistes of the calibre of Zakir Hussain, Hariprasad Chaurasia, Sivamani, Vikku Vinaykram and Dominique Piazza.

Apart from winning millions of music lovers heart, he also won numerous awards and recognitions.
He was the recipient of the prestigious Sangeeta Ratna, Kalaimamani and many other awards.
In 1988, he was awarded Padma Shri. In 2010, he was honoured with Sangeet Natak Academy Award.

For me  Mandolin Shrinivas music is something that I always loved and experienced. it was a unique and beautiful feeling to listen his music. its a tragedy that he passed away so early. He will live with us through his music. his legacy will live on.
